With the opening of the new HyForge casting facility at their aluminum recycling plant in Rackwitz, Germany, Hydro Aluminium has passed another milestone. This forty million Euro investment is in response to the automotive industry’s effort to decarbonize, and increases Hydro’s capacity for recycled aluminum scrap.

Aluminum strip and sheet are manufactured from cast slabs or strip in either a charged process or a continuous casting process. Hazelett’s process of choice is continuous casting, in which a Hazelett twin-belt casting facility is used.
Remelting metallic aluminum requires 10 to 15 times less energy than producing aluminum metal from bauxite. This is reason enough to collect every bit of aluminum that is unused or cannot continue in use and add it to a melting process. Every kilogram of aluminum that is collected prevents the emission of around 15 kg of CO2.
